Introduction

The music was composed in 1990 at the invitation of famous bamboo flutist Mr. Zhang Weiliang and his folk music chamber orchestra (now Huaxia Chamber Music Orchestra).

Ancient Chinese sage Confucius was so obsessed with Shao music that he "doesn’t know the taste of meat in three months". Imagine how wonderful the music is! Unfortunately, the beauty of music is hard to chase, and we can not possibly hear it nowadays. But its historical existence haunted composer’s heart like a mystery and stirred unlimited fascination. In response to the vanished ancient music, the composer took Shao as the name of this piece of folk chamber music. He says, "I compose the ‘Shao’ music not to imitate the ancient music, what I can do is to follow the original concept of ‘Shao’ music, using my own musical language to express my pursuit and praise of ‘Shao’ music’s beauty, meanwhile showing my admiration and respect for it."
