Xiaolin “Joe” Lu is one of China’s top crossover trumpet players, working in both the jazz and classical realms.

Biography

Xiaolin “Joe” Lu, the Artist of China Orchestra Network, is one of China’s top crossover trumpet players, working in both the jazz and classical realms. Mr. Lu has been actively involved with orchestras and local big bands since 2003. He has been a member of the Chi- na Philharmonic Orchestra since 2003, and was appointed Principal Trumpet by Maestro Yu Long in 2010.

Mr. Lu is also the former Principal Trumpet of China Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Quintet. He is a Visiting Professor of Trumpet and the Executive Director of Alicante Summer Brass Academy in Chi- na. He is a member of the Chinese chapter of the International Trumpet Guild.

In 2010 he successfully established the Beijing Jungle Big Band. The BJBB has gone on to perform at many international events hosted in Beijing, and has been a featured band at the annual Bei- jing Nine Gates Jazz Festival in the past years. Mr. Lu has led Bei- jing Jungle Big Band in movie productions, including “The Message” (2009), directed by Chen Guofu, and “Gone With The Bullets” (2014), directed by Jiang Wen. Recently Mr. Lu was ap- pointed horn section leader of STARBAND International Band, working as Lead Trumpet and Arranger for Chinese top pop musi- cians such as Yonglin Tan, Keqin Li, Yongqi Liang, Xinzhe Zhang, Zhiqian Xue, Jie He, Sulong Wang, Baoliang Sha and many others.

He was fortunate enough to play at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He played Mussorgsky “Pictures at an Exhibition” with China Philharmonic Orchestra at BBC Proms in July 2014, being the first Chinese Principal Trumpet player who played at the Proms. Also played with Chris Botti in Beijing Music Festival in 2013, and Grammy Gala concert in Chengdu the later of the same year. On June 16, 2016, Mr. Lu was invited by Cui Jian to play the concert of the Guinness Record of “the largest rock band”.

He was selected of being the top 10 best trumpet players in China by CCTV. He played the famous Chinese tune “Jasmine” live con- cert in CCTV Music Channel with the band which was composed of harmonica player, upright bass and tap dancer, formed a new way of blues.

Mr. Lu is a vintage trumpet aficionado, collecting trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns from around the world. His current collection con- sists of more than 40 instruments, the earliest of which is a Henri Gautier “Virtuoso” cornet handcrafted in Czechoslovakia in the early 20th century.

In 2019, his horn section from Beijing Jungle Big Band and himself have been invited to tour with Hanggai the Mogolian rock band for their new “Big Band Rock” album in Asian and Europe.
